Election meddling

El Salvador's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Marisol Argueta, spoke on September 18, 2008 before the conservative American Enterprise Institute in Washington, D.C. You can watch or listen to her remarks at this link. Her speech included a direct appeal for the US to concern itself with the possibility of an FMLN victory in the upcoming elections.

After stating that members of the FMLN have ties to the terrorist organizations ETA and FARC, Minister Argueta stated that "Losing El Salvador will be a lose/lose proposition for both the security and the national interests for both El Salvador and the United States." This could send El Salvador back 30 years to "a time of turmoil." "The security of the United States is at stake in El Salvador," she said quoting Ronald Reagan. She asserted that Latin America faces a threat from a wave of neo-socialism from groups which take power through democratic elections and populist appeals. "If power goes to the wrong hands, El Salvador may well be the next populist failure in the hemisphere."

The remarks by Argueta have prompted solidarity organizations including the SHARE Foundation to call for a letter writing to campaign to president Saca to protest the remarks and to protest the suggestion of US intervention. You can see their model letter at this link.

Argueta's appearance before the American Enterprise Institute has now been followed by the US accusing Venezuela of meddling in the internal affairs of El Salvador reports El Universal:
Charles Glazer, the ambassador of the United States in El Salvador, accused Venezuela of "intervening in internal affairs" of the Central American country, at a time when El Salvador is in the pre-election campaign ahead of the general elections in 2009.

"There is clear interference of Venezuela in the domestic affairs of Salvador, and when that occurs, the media should explain voters what is happening," said Glazer.

However, the diplomat did not specify in what way the Venezuelan government was involved in the internal affairs of the Central American country.

According to statements published on Wednesday by newspaper El Diario de Hoy, Glazer warned that Salvadorians should "be concerned" by some issues such as the advance of Petrocaribe in Central America, despite the fact that El Salvador is not a member country of the ALBA initiative, promoted by Venezuela. Petrocaribe offers payment facilities to partner countries interested in buying oil.

"The United States does not interfere in domestic policies," noted the chief of mission.

This is not the first time that the US has accused Venezuela of attempting to influence El Salvador's upcoming elections. In February of this year, a US intelligence report asserted that Hugo Chavez was planning to provide funding to the FMLN.

Another type of meddling occurred when President Saca spoke to the National Conference of Private Business recently. He called for business owners to consider the dangers to the country posed by a possible FMLN victory and urged them to speak to their employees and to open their eyes and ears so that they can understand. Such actions, Saca urged, were necessary so that the country does not lose 20 years of progress.

It doesn't take much imagination to get the message when your boss comes and tells you that it is very important that you understand the need to vote for ARENA in the upcoming elections. Of course, this is coming from a Saca government which "suggested" to government employees that they needed to show up for a major ARENA election rally.

UPDATE
President Saca has now told the press that he fully supports the Minster of Foreign Affairs, Marisol Argueta, in her speech before the American Enterprise Insitute because El Salvador is a country where there is freedom of expression.

glazer: "the US does not intervene in foreign affairs", then what is this moron exactly doing then? this is all bluff, repaying ARENA favors by casting doubt on voters right around elections time. but i do have to say that the fmln is screwing up though, the remarks made by medardo gonzalez about bringing back the old national currency, revising the CAFTA, and fmln directors touring venezuela, taking pictures with chavez is not helping the fmln, it's just giving arena and el diario de hoy fuel to terrorize and threaten voters of el salvador. i mean, even if you consider those possibilities, like i would, u don't say them out loud right before elections, u wait until you win to ponder on them. take a look at this article from contrapunto.com.sv

by the way, the ministry of public security will get $265 million for its budget next year, i wonder how much of that money will end up in rene figueroa's bank account. is it just me or do others can't stand and can't trust that wiesel?

-Cuanto cuesta llamar a El Salvador?

Señor Presidente: NO LE CUESTA NADA.

-------------------------

- No, espera, dejálo aparte...

JAJAJA... JAJAJA...

Inner Self Says:

"taking pictures with chavez is not helping the fmln, it's just giving arena and el diario de hoy fuel to terrorize and threaten voters of el salvador. i mean, even if you consider those possibilities, like i would, u don't say them out loud right before elections, u wait until you win to ponder on them".

SO inner self believes that Chavez IS SCARY, and that it is correct to lie to the people of El Salvador, instead of the fmln being true to its inclinations and embracing chavez outright during the campaing, Inner Self wants for the FMLN to lie and do it after they win.

Inner Self, I can only hope that when you find yourself you are lonely amidst your lies and amidst your manipulation of the truth because the ends keep on justifying your means. But that is NOT what El Salvador NEEDS. We have had that for TOO LONG.

When the FMLN wins, and they will win, El Salvador is only going to see itself go in a spiral downwards. Funes and his AMIGOS, will not be able to stop it, because the biggest opposition he will have is going to be from within, from the INNER SELVES like the one who wrote here, and which lurk in the shadows of the comiision politica and in the halls of the fraccion parlamentaria of the FMLN in the Asamblea Legislativa.

i guess you are right anonymous, to a very sinical extent i guess i do believe that ends justify the means.

on a different note, careless people are polluting this decent blog with mile long, boring articles we find in extremist editorials, just pass us the links, and we may look at them if we please, let's not ruin one of the still good blogs standing.

This is what ambassador Charles Glazer actually said when he used the word "concerned", and I know because I'm the one who asked him and got this statement: "With regards to the issue of Venezuela and Petrocaribe, the people that should be the most concerned about that are the salvadorans, not the US."

In other words: It's not up to the US to comment on this issue. If Venezuela is interfering in the Salvadoran elections that's up to the Salvadorans to decide.

When he said "clearly" he was referring to revelations made by the Salvadoran Attorney General's office, which revealed that large sums of money going up to 90 million dollars, have been channeled from Petrocaribe to the FMLN owned Alba Petróleos. Since Alba, which has lost money so far, "donated" 2 million dollars to the FMLN municipalities that are facing the greatest election challenges, then it would appear that Venezuela is funding local political campaigns, according to the Attorney General who has an open case on Alba Petróleos.

In this context, the issue becomes very different.

Argueta's biased assertions RE an FLMN voctory in DC only strenghten the need for an FMLN victory. A true democracy MUST be tolerant of right-wing and left-wing ideologies. Since freedom is a pillar of democracy there can be no argument about the existence of ideas. If such ideas claim to better society, then, the effectiveness of such ideas can only be questioned. I'm in favor of an FMLN victory because (as in Obama's case) it would assert all the expectations that we sherish: that under a democracy we should expect those who certain sectors of society argue (Argueta's) should fail to actually SUCCEED. The polls clearly favor the FMLN, so be it. Any one know where I can obtain an FMLN sticker for my car or pin for my jacket?
Thankx! -Walter (Burbank, CA)
