Vatican's notification to Fr. Jon Sobrino, S.J. made public

You can now read for yourself the notification from the Vatican to Father Sobrino declaring that certain propositions in his writings "are not in conformity with the doctrine of the Church."

There does not appear to be any sanction, punishment, or declaration that Fr. Sobrino may not teach or write in the future as had been previoiusly reported.

The full text of the Notification can be found here. An Explanatory Note which accompanies the Notification can be found here.

So we are advised by the Church that Father Sobrino's writings "are either erroneous or dangerous and may cause harm to the faithful," and we are provided extensive theological discourse on why this is so.

Yet the Church elects to show itself magnanimous and merciful, though it has been empowered by the Lord to "command certain men not to teach false doctrines any longer."

Would that the enemies of Christ's Church would repent from their harsh libels of her!

"It's a shame that the this pope will do what the Atlactl Batallion could not do--silence Father Sobrino."

"makes sense to me if the right wanted to take over the left via the church since opus dei is almost cult like and major conservative"

"crack down on Jon Sobrino! It certainly brings to mind Father Grande's aphorism that the powerful prefer "Christ with a muzzle."

"Jon Sobrino is just another victim of the oppressive Vatican. The Nazi Pope strikes again..."

I am not qualified to judge the theological merits of the Notification and Jon Sobrino's writings, and since I am not a Roman Catholic, I would not presume to do so.

I agree with E-V that the intemperate comments made on this blog are inappropriate.

What now?

What we know i that the Christian Church have so many groups or interpretations, so many people within the vatican had defended liberation Theology, and that's one of the reasons for the vatican to stop the punishment again father Jon Sobrino.

The OPUS DEI is not the church, as EV wants to place it, as the absolute voice of the church.

Seems to me, the same happens when so many people critizice the republican administration, and the bush's fans accused the oposition to be un patriotic and anti-USA, just to marginalise the opposition to the war.

Vatican is a state, with so many groups within.

The church has prohibited the rest of it bishops to allow Father Jon Sobrino to participate in any assemblies.

That is another way of the political way the Vatican to stop Father Sobrino and silence his voice, since they couldn't stop or punished him, neither take him out from the church where there are so many bishops that defend him.

I believe Fr. Jon Sobrino, sj is shaking the foundation of the Church as Institution by his ministry. He is a man of God, true son of St. Ignatius of Loyola. My question is about their Superior General: what is his position concerning the allegations. In the past Fr. Pedro Arrupe would defense his companion. Or Fr. Juan Alfaro, Fr. Arthur McGovern. Please could you inform us about the position of the Superior General of the Jesuits? This is written in the sign of A.M.D.G
