CAFTA moves forward in US Senate

The US Senate moved CAFTA a small step forward towards ratification on Tuesday. The Senate Finance Committee passed the treaty, although the committee did not address the interests of the powerful sugar lobby which is the biggest obstacle to ratification. The treaty will next be reviewed by the House Ways and Means Committee. Observers have indicated that prospects of passage are tougher in the House than in the Senate.

Excellent work in all of these posts Tim. Keep an eye on that ILEA center.

I had a conversation last night with a couple who went to El Salvador with a Maryknoll group. Their insights were interesting, if somewhat superficial.

They talked about a child care center for street vendors that seems to be doing a fantastic job.

I was troubled by the gang violence and blackmailing, and persistent reports of poverty.

Apparently the new bishop of El Salvador is a member of Opus Dei, and made himself very unpopular by forbidding people from attending masses to visit Romero's tomb.

I don't know if I ever noticed that you're from Wisconsin. I am too - Milwaukee. But it's been a while. Where are you from.

Say, if you have a free moment, I'd love to find how you're categorizing your posts (tags) and if that helps you keep your own posts organized (i.e., do you have other categories than "El Salvador"?).
