What others are writing

A young friend from Germany wrote the following about the parties' campaign closing rallies this weekend:
Yesterday we were on the Alameda Juan Pablo II to observe the final event of the campaign of the FMLN. It was really an incredible feeling, 200.000 people in the street, a sea of red. Usually you only see people waving flags of Che Guevara, Fidel Castro and Karl Marx in history books, but here history is living!
And then they all together sang the ode to joy from Beethoven and I put the hand on my heart and sang the hymns of Europe on the top of my voice.

Today in the Estadio Cuscatlan ARENA put an ARENA Cap, a bag of water and a flag on every single seat!

The difference could not be bigger...

From around the web, there are a number of new articles written in English about El Salvador's elections. The basic theme is that the upcoming election is a big opportunity for the left:

Washington Post's faulty reporting about El Salvador began when Christopher Dickey left in 1980, shortly thereafter replaced by hacks such as Joanne Omang who--among others--did the U.S. State Deptartment's Elliott Abrams requested PR job for now convicted war criminals Jose Guillermo Garcia and Eugenio Vides Casanova.

6,000 Salvadoran soldiers in Iraq was perhaps once a dream of Donald Rumsfeld's, but never a fact. Try the size of a battalion--one of those old-time mass-murder battalions such as the Atlacatl: maybe 600 soldiers max.
The Washington Post inaccuracies are the usual fare for the uninfomed yet still deadly inside-the-beltway cliques.

I'm at my wit's end with the repeated contention that Funes is the first non-combatant presidential candidate for the FMLN. The statement appears in some of these articles, as well as in the CISPES/NACLA report on the 2009 elections. Ruben Zamora, who was never a combatant, was the FMLN's first presidential candidate in 1994. Why does this fact seem to evade so many?

Because the people who are writing these articles have only been out of the US on a vacation. They don't have a clue about the countries of which they write.
