Homicide rate dropping

The recently released statistics on murder in El Salvador show that killings have dropped 10% through the first 9 months of the year from the total in the same period last year:

  • In 2007, 2664 homicides through September
  • In 2006, 2959 homicides through September

This is certainly an improvement, although there is a long, long way to go before El Salvador can be seen as a country with a "normal" level of violence. We can expect to see ARENA pointing to the reduction as evidence of the effectiveness of its policies as the political campaigns continue to heat up.

well, guatemala did as best as it could have by electing alvaro colom; i hope el salvador does the same and elects mauricio funes in 2009.

10%?

I'd say that's probably within the noise or randomness level. For any given level of violence, you could conceivable have swings of 20% year on year for no reason at all. Just randomness.

Wake me up if ever violence goes down 30% or 40%. Then we are talking.

So, criticism aside, can someone tell me what the opposition proposes in terms of improvements in this matter?

How many homicides are not reported? We'll never know the real cost of the violence in ES.
