Changing of the guard at the US Embassy in San Salvador

Douglas Barclay ended his tour of duty as the US Ambassador to El Salvador on January 17. He will be succeeded by Charles Glazer, a businessman and Bush fundraiser from Connecticut.

Ambassador Barclay is from Pulaski, New York, and you can read a retrospective view on this three years in El Salvador which appeared in his home town Oswego County Business Magazine. (I am also quoted a few times in that article).

Mr. Barclay is to be fondly remembered in these parts. The gentleman has enourmous gravitas and even made our neglectful government and legislature stop for a minute and realize that crime is hurting our people in a very bad way.

There is no question in my mind that he was of the uttermost help in getting TPS further extended and the Millenium Account Challenge approved for ES.

Very few Salvadoreans will disagree that these two things alone are outstanding and unusual benefits.

Now, isn't that pitiful? To have a foreign interventionist criticize a whole society (government and private sector included) to stop evading taxes and rescue the population from the spiral of crime years of neglect (corruption, mismanagement) have created, in order to get the country to "do something"...

Yes, it is rather pitiful.

Our government spends its energies creating new bureaucracies (see: Superintendencia de Competencia, MiTur, MARN, etc.), while the people live, and die, in terror of crime.
